Do I need a Doctors referral before I can see a physiotherapist?

No you do not require a doctor’s referral to receive physiotherapy services.  Insurance companies, however, sometimes require a doctor’s referral before they will reimburse cost.  If you have extended health benefits that cover physiotherapy it is best that you check with your individual provider.

What is acupuncture and how does it work?

Acupunctures involves inserting tiny needles into specific areas of the body called acupuncture points. It works by stimulating your body’s neuroendocrine system to produce endorphins, which are the body’s own pain relieving chemicals. It is also used to release tender trigger points in muscles to restore muscle length thus relieving pressure on the nerves, improving mobility and restoring normal function.

The needles are often left in for 20 minutes to have an optimal effect. Our therapists primarily perform ‘Anatomical Acupuncture’ which is a more modern approach combining centurys old Chinese traditions and western medical knowledge to increase effectiveness. We also use dry needling techniques to stimulate release of spasm and trigger points thereby improving muscle function.

If your physiotherapist has a medical concern regarding your care, they will discuss them with you and follow up with your doctor. At Wildwood Physiotherapy we pride ourselves on working closely with your team of health care professionals to ensure the best management of your needs.
